Introduction to Qualifications
The prime objective of the Association of Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors is to uphold the highest achievable standards of game angling instruction for the benefit of game angling in the United Kingdom.
The Association was formed in 2003 and has a membership of approximately 100. AAPGAI became fully constituted as an independent organisation in 2004 to represent the interests and meet the aspirations of all ambitious top class game-angling instructors both in the UK and overseas. The Association strives to ensure its members are able to offer the best-informed advice and instruction to clients wishing to learn or improve their casting or fishing techniques.
The Association's aim for high standards of instruction is achieved by, setting and maintaining a rigorous, fair and transparent entrance examination and training process for all aspiring instructors. This process covers the technical casting, teaching, diagnostic and game angling skills required to deliver first class tuition in all aspects of game angling. The Association's members are expected to maintain and improve their skills by attending continuing professional development (CPD) events featuring new products, techniques and developments in the sphere of game angling. AAPGAI members are actively involved professionally teaching fly fishing to children, beginners, intermediate and advanced students of all ages for all freshwater and saltwater game species.
AAPGAI Qualifications
and Examinations
Over the years there have been, and still are,
several qualifications of varying degrees of standard
and technical content that game angling instructors
can attain, some good and some not so good. Unfortunately
the angling public are generally unaware of the
many varying level of competence of some instructors
who advertise their services. AAPGAI aims to address
this problem so that anyone who books tuition
with an AAPGAI instructor will have full confidence
the instructor has been properly trained and holds
the highest credential available.
This new qualification has now updated the technical content of its predecessor and made assessments more measurable. The new syllabus incorporates new casts and techniques that have evolved in the ever-widening spectrum of fly-fishing. AAPGAI now recognise the AAPGAI "Advanced" qualification as having superseded the standards and technical content of the old APGAI qualification.
The Qualification
Process
The AAPGAI examination process centres round the
AAPGAI "Advanced" qualification. To aid progression
to the Advanced stage there is now an introductory
Provisional stage whereby having successfully
completed a friendly pre assessment session the
candidate can depending on their experience and
technical expertise undergo the Provisional examination
immediately or be referred to our mentoring programme
to prepare for sitting the examination at a later
stage.
The Provisional level instructor on successful completion of the Provisional examination qualifies for "Associate " membership of AAPGAI. Not until the candidate has passed an "Advanced" level qualification will he or she become a full voting member of AAPGAI. In time and with more experience comes the opportunity to undertake the AAPGAI "Masters" level which, when attained, provides the Association with a highly trained team of qualified assessors.
The various stages
of the AAPGAI qualifications are explained in
